Summer Gardening Extravaganza – Saturday, July 10-Sunday, July 18

Gardeners know Memorial Day signals the beginning of the gardening season – not the end. We want to spend the lazy, hazy days of summer with our hands in the soil and our hearts in our gardens. We have planned a Summer Gardening Extravaganza from Saturday, July 10 through Sunday, July 18 just for gardeners like you! We have two special speakers coming to share their gardening passions with you.

First, Shawna Coronado, author of Gardening Nude, will be here on Saturday, July 10 from 1-2 p.m. to share how she turned her traditional garden and lawn space into an area to feed the hungry while maintaining its beauty and utilizing sustainable gardening techniques.

Next, Marci Lebowitz (The Kitchen Anarchist) will be here on Saturday, July 17 from 1-2 p.m. to teach us how to prepare simple, quick and delightful dishes fresh from the garden. She will share tips, recipes and tastings of hors d’oeuvres and salads using fresh herbs, veggies and fruits that will astound the palette.

The cost to attend either presentation is $10 and registration is required. Call 630-293-1040 ext. 2.

Perennial Festival – Garden Verses

Our annual Perennial Festival begins Saturday, June 19 and runs through Sunday, June 27. Fourteen gardens have been created by our talented staff in keeping with this year’s theme, Garden Verses. Guided tours are given daily at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Or stop in, pick up a map, and explore the gardens on your own.

Take advantage of daily specials on plants and garden decor. Attend one of many free presentations – see our calendar for a complete listing of events. And, our festival wouldn’t be complete with our famous complimentary popcorn and lemonade.

Fairy Garden Festival – May 29-June 6

We have caught fairy fever at The Planter’s Palette! See what all the excitement is about at our first annual Fairy Garden Festival beginning on Saturday, May 29 and continuing through Sunday, June 6. I am thankful to my mom for my love of gardening even though I didn’t always appreciate the time I spent in the garden as a child. As I picked never-ending cherries or pulled weeds from our huge vegetable garden, I wished to be anywhere but the garden. But I still remember the delicious sweetness of freshly picked raspberries and strawberries, the thrill of marigold seedlings emerging, and the joy of just laying in the grass looking at pictures in the clouds. I learned valuable life lessons in the garden. Thanks Mom!

Our Spring Open House was a huge success thanks to our wonderful customers, beautiful plants and spectacular spring weather. Thanks to all of you who voted for your favorite container in our container contest. The winning container is pictured. This container, designed by Pamela Matus, won by just 2 votes! We have drawn the ten names and emailed the lucky winners of Sue Amatangelo’s book, “The ABC’s of Beautiful Containers”.

Join us for classes about everything from how to grow vegetables you can plant right now to how to decorate your front door for spring. See our calendar for a complete list of educational opportunities.

Vote for your favorite container garden! Pick up a voting slip from a cashier and choose your favorite among a variety of container gardens created by our staff. At the conclusion of our Open House, we will draw 10 votes. Lucky winners will receive an autographed copy of The ABC’s of Beautiful Containers by Sue Amatangelo.

Enjoy freshly-popped popcorn while you take advantage of special purchase prices on benches, earth boxes and lots more! We’re also giving away 1 lb. packages of earthworm castings to the first 75 customers who spend $25 or more on both Saturday, April 24 and Sunday, April 25.

What a gorgeous day to begin the 2010 season at The Planter’s Palette. As we begin our 30th season in business, we continue to grow our plants here at The Planter’s Palette to ensure the selection and quality we want for our customers.

Thanks to our customers who voted us one of the ‘Best of the West’ garden centers by West Suburban Living magazine. We couldn’t do it without you!

Opening for the Season on April 1st

We are busily unpacking boxes and stocking shelves; bringing pansies and other cool-season flowers into our greenhouse; and waking up the perennials from their winter slumber. Every new spring brings the excitement of a new beginning; and as we enter our 30th season, we can’t wait to share another season in the garden with you!

Time to Plan Spring Landscaping Projects

Now is the perfect time to assess your current landscape. Without the leaves of trees and while the perennials are sleeping, it is easy to see the ‘bones’ of your landscape. Do you need more structure? The answer may be some large shrubs, a retaining wall, a patio, or maybe even a whole new planting area.

Winter isn’t for hibernating!

We don’t spend the winter in hibernation here at The Planter’s Palette. We are busy building some new benches, traveling to trade shows for the latest trends in plants and garden decor, planting annuals and perennials, and planning ways to make your shopping experience even better in 2010. Although we are officially closed until April 1st, the office is open Monday through Friday if you want to stop by to purchase a gift certificate.
