Time to Plan Spring Landscaping Projects

Now is the perfect time to assess your current landscape. Without the leaves of trees and while the perennials are sleeping, it is easy to see the ‘bones’ of your landscape. Do you need more structure? The answer may be some large shrubs, a retaining wall, a patio, or maybe even a whole new planting area.

Admission: Adults – $7; Seniors – $4; Children – Free. Parking is also free.

Winter isn’t for hibernating!

We don’t spend the winter in hibernation here at The Planter’s Palette. We are busy building some new benches, traveling to trade shows for the latest trends in plants and garden decor, planting annuals and perennials, and planning ways to make your shopping experience even better in 2010. Although we are officially closed until April 1st, the office is open Monday through Friday if you want to stop by to purchase a gift certificate.

The bulbs have arrived, and the barn is filled with colorful boxes containing the promise of spring. We have lots of varieties of tulips, daffodils, alliums, and all the minor bulbs like scilla, grape hyacinths, crocus, and more. Zucchini, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, eggplant, tomatillos, onions, and of course, tomatoes and tomato berries are just some of what we have to offer – fresh, every day. Locally grown sweet corn and peaches are also available. Stop by and pick up some for you and your family today.

Surplus Sale – August 1-9

Stock up on annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and garden decor at our Surplus Sale on August 1 – 9.

What is a surplus sale? Because we grow our own plants here at The Planter’s Palette, we try to determine how many you all will want to purchase during the season. Sometimes we are correct, but sometimes we overestimate the demand for a plant. When this is the case, we have a surplus of plants – more than we want to overwinter.

Beginning Saturday, August 1st our new greenhouse will be filled with all those surplus perennials and other bargains galore, including trees and shrubs, pottery and garden decor, and still-lovely summer annuals – all at 20-60% off their original prices.

Perennial Festival – Garden Spaces

Our Perennial Festival is scheduled for July 11 – 19. The theme this year is Garden Spaces. Explore 13 staff-designed gardens demonstrating the many ways people use gardens to enrich their lives from spaces for birds, bees and butterflies and meditation to spaces for romance and ’staycations’ and many more.

Take a daily staff-led tour at 10:00 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. or experience the gardens on your own with our map. Learn something new at a wide variety of classes and demonstrations. Have fun at one of our special events. Free tool sharpening is available on Saturday, July 11 from 9 – 11 a.m. Click on ‘Perennial Festival’ under our Calendar for a complete list of Perennial Festival activities.

Of course, there will be lots of specials on plants and garden decor. And what would a festival be without fresly popped popcorn and ice-cold lemonade?

Benefit Garden Walk

I encourage you all to purchase tickets for our benefit garden walk on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28. The gardens are beautiful!

Twelve garden owners have generously agreed to share their gardens with you. Although their gardens were fabulous when we previewed them last summer, they’ve worked very hard this spring to put on special finishing touches.

Four gardens are just west of St. Charles; two are in Bartlett; two are in West Chicago; one is in Glen Ellyn; and three are in Wheaton. Each group of gardens are in close proximity to each other.

Proceeds will be donated to community organizations that are near and dear to our hearts – University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and DuPage County Animal Care & Control.

One-day tickets are $15; weekend tickets are $25. Purchase tickets at The Planter’s Palette, Kane County Extension – 535 South Randall Rd. – St. Charles, or call 630-293-1040 x 2 and we’ll mail them to you.
