Lobelia cardinalis
Much admired woodland native. Crimson red tubular flowers rise up on 2-4' spikes, late July, invigorating the late season garden. Attracts hummingbirds. Once established, often re-seeds. Space 18-24" apart.
Light to partial shade in moist, organically rich soil. Mulch roots in summer and winter to conserve moisture. Can tolerate sunnier sites if constant moisture is present.
